Jesus Commanded, “Call No Man Father”

Matthew 23:9

9 “And do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven.”

This teaching and our sign was inspired by what Catholic Commentators of the New American Bible wrote concerning Matthew 23:1-12. In these verses Jesus teaches the crowds and his disciples to call no man on earth Father and also forbidding other titles. Here is the statement made by the Catholic New American Bible Commentary, copyright 1991:

The Matthean Jesus forbids not only the titles but the spirit of superiority and pride that is shown by their acceptance.”

We were shocked to find this statement not in a protestant commentary, but in a Catholic commentary! “Matthean Jesus”, is this commentary suggesting that there is more than one Jesus? Is the Catholic church somehow suggesting that the Jesus found in the Gospel of Matthew is actually another Jesus than the one that they claim. Furthermore, this proves to us that at least someone in Rome knows that calling the priest “Father” and the pope “Holy Father” is wrong.
